Pregnancy First Pregnlampsia, Can the Second Get Again?

If in the first pregnancy a woman has been diagnosed with preeclampsia, is it in later pregnancy that the woman is free from reeclampsia risk?

According to obstetrics and gynecology doctors Fetomaternal Division RSU Dr. Soetomo Surabaya and Airlangga University Hospital, Dr. Khanisyah Erza Gumilar, SpOG, history of preeclampsia in previous pregnancy is one risk factor for recurrent preeclampsia in subsequent pregnancies.

"This means the risk is still there, aka can happen again," said Dr. Erza

To prevent the condition from recurring, Dr. Erza emphasized the importance of screening for preeclampsia. This can be known exactly the condition of mother and fetus. Aspilant administration and calcium supplements during pregnancy, as well as routine pregnancy control,  can also be done to avoid preeclampsia and prevent complications.

"Philosophically, preeclampsia occurs in pregnancy so logically when pregnancy is terminated, preeclampsia is resolved, but complications of preeclampsia can be found after delivery," he added.

He continued, in some cases even can be found 'post partum preeclampsia' or preeclampsia / eklampsia postpartum. There are also cases of hypertension that persist in some pregnant women with preeclampsia.

"There have been recent studies reporting that preeclampsia increases the risk of developing diabetes, even a dozen years later after pregnancy with preeclampsia," explained Dr. Erza.
